Synopsis:
Bitter indictment against the Venice of intellectuals and tourists, desperate cry of pain from the betrayed lover, this polemical pamphlet, first published in 1995, is a paradoxical declaration of love for the lagoon city, for centuries a crossroads of travelers of every sort and the stage of an infinite refraction of images and discourses. In sharp pages dense with literary references, Régis Debray launches a caustic attack against this Venice, which centuries of decline have transfigured from a living city into a commonplace, symbolically opposing it to Naples, as opposite as the concepts of nature and culture, art and life are to each other. The volume is completed by a new preface by the author and a text by Gianni Montieri, which, by exploring and reworking this contraposition, testify that the twenty-five years since the first publication of Against Venice have not at all made this heartfelt j’accuse less relevant.
