Synopsis:
What remains of a city when its image has eroded its very essence? Taking this question as his starting point, Giuseppe Ghigi, historian and film critic, takes us on a journey through the myths and stereotypes that surround the city of Venice. Whilst the roots of the myth can be traced back to the eighteenth century with the travel accounts of the Grand Tour and then to the nineteenth century with the first photographs, it was cinema, thanks to its ability to reach the masses, that cemented the image of Venice as an otherworldly place, steeped in magic and romance.
Through an analysis of dozens of films and cinematic sequences from different eras and with the aid of a rich collection of illustrations, the book explores the clichés that have fuelled the Venetian imagination, revealing how cinema – which has used the city as a film set in more than six hundred feature films – has been the principal architect of the mythical narrative of Venice, which continues to attract visitors from all over the world.
